Israel Exerting Authority Further Within the Gaza Strip Beyond Anticipated, New Boundary Indicators Indicate

New evidence indicate that Israeli defense forces are exercising authority over more territory within the Gaza Strip than initially expected under the ceasefire agreement.

This Truce Deal and the Yellow Boundary

According to the first phase of the agreement, Israeli authorities committed to retreat to a demarcation border extending along the north, southern, and east edges of Gaza. This boundary was marked by a yellow line on official charts published by the defense forces and has become referred to as the "Yellow Line."

However, recent footage and satellite images show that markers positioned by Israel's soldiers in several areas to mark the boundary have been set hundreds of yards deeper within the strip than the expected withdrawal boundary.

Official Comments and Advisories

Israeli Defence Official Israel Katz—which instructed troops to place the distinctive blocks—stated that anyone approaching the boundary "will be met with gunfire." There have already been at least two deadly events close to the boundary zone.

When contacted, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) did not address the allegations, saying only that: "IDF troops under the Southern Command have begun marking the Yellow Line in the Gaza Strip to establish tactical clarity on the terrain."

Lack of Precision and Uncertainty

There's existed a consistent lack of clarity regarding where exactly the demarcation would be established, with multiple different maps published by the U.S. administration, former U.S. President, and the Israeli defense forces in the run up to the truce agreement that took effect on October 10.

As of 14 October, the IDF issued the most recent edition showing the demarcation on their digital chart, which is used to communicate its stance to residents in the Gaza Strip.

North and South Areas

Near the northern sector, adjacent to the al-Atatra neighbourhood, aerial video from the Israeli military revealed that a line of six yellow blocks were as much as 520m further within the territory than would have been anticipated from the official maps.

Video geolocated depicted personnel operating heavy machinery and excavators to relocate the heavy distinctive markers and position them along the seaside al-Rashid route.

A similar scenario was visible in southern Gaza, where a satellite image captured on 19 October showed ten indicators placed close to the urban area of Khan Younis. The row of blocks ranges from 180m-290 meters inside the Yellow Line established by the Israeli military.

Experts Interpretation

Several analysts indicated that the blocks were intended to establish a "buffer zone" between local residents and IDF personnel. One expert stated the action would be in line with a ongoing "strategic culture" that aims to protect the state from nearby areas it does not fully control.

"It provides the Israeli military space to operate and create a 'kill zone' targeting potential targets," an analyst commented. "Potential threats can be targeted prior to they approach the IDF boundary. It is a somewhat like no man's land that doesn't belong to either side—and Israeli authorities tends to acquire that territory from the adversary's portion not its territory."

Several experts proposed that the difference separating the markers and the IDF map was an intentional strategy to alert residents they are "approaching an zone of elevated danger."

An analyst noted that several markers "seem to be positioned close to pathways or walls, making them more straightforward to spot."

Resident Uncertainty and Events

There is already uncertainty among residents over areas where it is secure to go.

Abdel Qader Ayman Bakr who resides close to the interim demarcation in the east part of Gaza City Shejaiya district said that, despite promises from Israel of clear markings, he had observed no such markers put in place.

"Each day, we can see Israeli army equipment and soldiers at a fairly nearby range, but we have no means of determining whether we are in what is considered a 'secure area' or 'a hazardous location'," he said. "We are constantly vulnerable to danger, especially as we are compelled to stay in this location because this is where our residence once stood."

After the truce was implemented, the Israeli military has documented a number of cases of individuals crossing the Yellow Line. On each occasions the IDF said it engaged those involved.

Video obtained and verified showed the consequences of one event on 17 October, which the Hamas-run Civil Defence agency claimed resulted in the deaths of eleven non-combatants—comprising women and children reportedly allegedly from the identical family. The authority stated the Palestinians' vehicle was targeted by Israeli forces after approaching the Yellow Line to the east of the city in the Zeitoun area.

The footage displayed rescue personnel examining the destroyed remains of a vehicle and covering a adjacent severely damaged remains of a child with a light-colored cloth. Geolocation located the footage to a spot around 125m over the Yellow Line indicated on maps by the Israeli military.

The IDF stated alert rounds were discharged at a "suspect vehicle" that had breached the line. The statement added when the car did not to stop, troops opened fire "to remove the threat."

Legal Status and Obligations

Meanwhile, the legal status of the boundary has also been challenged.

"The state's obligations under the regulations of hostilities do not end even for those violating the demarcation," commented Dr Lawrence Hill-Cawthorne. "The military can only engage hostile combatants or those directly involved in conflict, and in such actions it must not inflict excessive civilian casualties."

Officially, an Israel's military spokesperson stated: "Israeli forces under the military command continue to function to eliminate every threat to the troops and to protect the civilians of the State of Israel."

They added that the concrete blocks are "being placed each 200 metres."
