British Foreign Office has placed an additional eleven new nations to its travel alert register about the threats of toxic alcohol toxicity from contaminated spirits.

The updated warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "an international surge in the incidence of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Only recently, the government had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, after multiple high-profile events such as the tragic demise of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being warned that as little as small amounts of methanol can cause blindness or loss of life within 12 to 48 hours.

What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Used?

Methanol is a toxic chemical commonly utilized in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint thinner. It is not intended for drinking.

Although it is naturally produced during the production of beverages, licensed producers bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the distillation process.

However in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to save money, and since it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to detect.

Official Advice for Travellers

Government representative the minister said that each tourist should know the indicators of methanol poisoning.

"While consuming alcohol in foreign countries, opt for reputable establishments and avoid homemade alcohol or free shots," the minister advised.

"In case something appears suspicious, such as a fatigue that's way worse than usual or blurred eyesight – get medical help immediately."

The entire list of destinations identified as posing a risk of methanol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
