Unmasking Venezuela Celebration Videos and AI-Generated Pictures of Nicolás Maduro.

Computer-created images purporting to show Nicolás Maduro detained after his capture by the American authorities have gained tens of millions of impressions on social media.

The Way Fake Pictures of the President Surfaced Within Hours

The first inauthentic synthetic picture apparently displaying him taken off a aircraft surfaced shortly after. This image was unpublished by any official American sources; rather, it was posted on X by an account describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.

Verification involved an AI-watermark detector, determining the image was generated or edited with Google AI.

Additional synthetic images began to spread in the following period, seemingly depicting different views of the leader in custody. Visible logos on these pictures show they were posted by an Instagram account called ultravfx.

AI analysis indicates the further pictures were likewise produced using AI technology.

Real Photo Released but Fakes Persisted

Donald Trump posted the first real photo of Nicolás Maduro restrained aboard the US Navy ship on Saturday morning. Yet following the authentic image was published, AI-generated images continued to spread but were altered to include the grey tracksuit seen on Maduro.

Online investigation show these altered fabrications were first posted on TikTok by a digital art profile. Again, SynthID says these subsequent pictures were produced with AI tools.

Key Points:

  • Synthetic media gained traction following the news of the president's apprehension.
  • The initial fabricated image was shared within hours on social media.
  • Tools like AI-watermark detectors were used to verify the images as inauthentic.
  • Fake images persisted to circulate and evolve despite the release of authentic photographs.
  • The origin of many fabricated images was linked to social media accounts dedicated to AI art.
