White House Reveals Federal Employee Job Cuts as Funding Gap Nears Three-Week Mark

The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been issued within that department. Additionally, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the moves in court.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public nationwide,” said a national union president, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from carrying out any layoffs during the funding gap. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the government to disclose details on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

An analysis argued that a funding lapse restricts the authority of the government to carry out firings, referencing official advice that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been started prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the very day that government employees got only a incomplete payment covering the final days of the previous month but not the start of October, since funding lapsed at the start of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s impact on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
